Mamaia is the oldest and main seaside tourist resort in Romania. It is located on the Black Sea, northeast of Constanţa (of which it is an administrative part), has a length of 8 km and a width of only 300 meters, between Lake Siutghiol and the Black Sea. a very fine sand and an average width of 250 meters.
The resident population is less than 50 inhabitants in the winter period and the first buildings on the coast north of Constance date back to 1906 and consisted of two wooden pavilions by the sea inaugurated on 22 August of the same year designed by the architect Petre Antonescu located at the height of the current casino. To facilitate the influx of tourists from the city, a railway was built which was later dismantled and now occupied by the Bulevardul Mamaia. A fire in 1920 destroyed the first buildings.
A further increase in tourist activity occurred in 1935 with the construction of the first hotel and casino. At the same time, the royal summer residence was also built (today occupied by the Castel Club). During the communist period the development and construction of hotels continued, particularly between 1959 and 1965 in the southern part and between 1982 and 1985 in the north.
